The thing is that most people don't actually care about women safety or any issue. They try to find the perfect case that suits their political agenda. This can also be seen when people were raising how a women was made to walk naked in Manipur and people and opposition demanded response from Government because it was fitting their agenda to which the the government responded with their own whataboutery like what about XYZ case. They have gone on nationwide strikes, that is why it is getting attention. And more than the rape, its connection to organ and drug smuggling, the lying by police is also highlighted.

Now that you have called it out I realised something else as well. During Nirbhaya, the name of the victim was kept secret and the government at that time had shown a level of compassion that these people just don't know how to. But for the Kolkata case, the name, the reports and more were revealed within a week. The vandalisers who attacked the protesters seemed very similar to the ones that attacked post Delhi and West Bengal elections.

There are two reasons behind the outrage

1. The victim happens to be someone the middle class, upper castes can empathise with.

2. It's in a non BJP state so ofc the entire IT CELL is on this, even embellishing violent details, graphic accounts to raise this.

It is not like people have suddenly realised oooh rape is bad, and women should not be raped, if that was the case then other rapes which have occurred just afterwards would have gotten the same support. Neither this rape was particularly once in a million violent, the dalit girl rape was brutal, but see how nobody cares.

The Kolkata rape case got highlighted because initially rg kar management tried to sabotage the case as suicide. Her colleague and junior doctors then started the protest. They just wanted justice for her. But as gradually people got aware how the govt was trying to mislead the case other medical fraternity also joined.

This case may be political in other states but in west bengal the medical fraternity tried to keep it distant from politics. It is not political at least in Kolkata. People here don't care about bjp. 

They started the protest and now the people of Kolkata is behind them. If you want to protest for other cases why you are not starting yourself. People will follow you.
